Rangitoto Island - Summit Walk

Travel to the dormant volcano island just a short ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Climb to the summit and experience panoramic views. Beginning at Rangitoto wharf, this easy trail leads you through lava fields and the world’s largest pōhutukawa forest before giving way to stunning panoramic views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf. We recommend taking the diversion to the Lava Caves Track, where you can explore lava tunnels and caves. As you near the top of Rangitoto Island don’t forget to take a short detour and explore the magical lava caves, which were formed by flowing lava hollowing out a tunnel around 600 years ago. Located only 15 minutes off the Summit Track, the lava caves are a unique experience not to be missed. Simply follow the signposts and make sure not to forget a torch! Lava Cave Details - 15 minutes one-way from the Summit Track and 1 hour 45 minutes one way from Rangitoto wharf. - Located 200 metres from Rangitoto Summit. - Largest cave is approximately 50 metres deep. - Moderate difficulty level. - Not accessible for pushchairs or wheelchairs. To enter and complete the summit walk is free, you will need to pre book your ferry tickets to get to Rangitoto Island. - Children ages 0-5 travel free. - The ferry will depart from piers 13 and 14 at the Auckland Ferry Terminal. - It takes approximately 30minutes each way - Tickets are valid for return travel, on the same day. NEED TO KNOW: There is no access to drinking water on the island; bring your own supply with you. Bring sturdy shoes as the ground can be uneven and rugged in parts.
